NSF ETAP Research Education and Mentoring (REM) Summer 2024

Engagement of South Dakota Students in Critical STEM Innovations for Energy Workforce Development (STEM-EWD)

Continuing off the success of the previous year’s REM program, the South Dakota Mines site hosted another session in the Summer of 2024. Twelve students from four local high schools participated in three different projects related to the battery industry, including topics such as lithium remediation through plants, the development of sodium-ion battery cathode materials, and lithium battery waste recycling. Students were able to use South Dakota Mines resources to conduct hands-on university level research for their projects. Field trips to different businesses and sites, such as VRC Metal Systems, B9 Creations, and the Sanford Underground Research Facility were also included. The group was also honored to have National Science Foundation REM Director Alias Smith visit to observe and provide feedback on the direct of the program. At the end of six weeks of hands on research and learning, students gave final presentations on their accomplishments in PowerPoint and poster form, they can be viewed below. South Dakota Mines hopes to continue the program into the summer of 2025!
